Dec 26, 2024

Colombia continues to make strides in the legal cannabis export market, solidifying its position as a key player in the global industry. On August 27, 2024, the Office of the Presidency announced that the country will export Cannabis sativa plant material to North Macedonia, expanding its network of over 12 international partners importing Colombian cannabis. This achievement highlights the country’s potential in the global cannabis market and its ability to meet the strict phytosanitary standards required by these markets.

The export was carried out from the municipality of La Ceja, Antioquia, where 180 asexual plantlets were certified by the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA). This certification ensured that the shipment complied with all local and international phytosanitary requirements. The dispatch took place from José María Córdova International Airport, adhering to all relevant regulations. According to the ICA’s general manager, the institute has closely collaborated with companies in the sector, fostering their growth and enhancing their economic impact nationwide.

Richmond Seeds S.A.S., an Antioquia-based company specializing in cannabis plant material production, spearheaded this export. Its general manager, Felipe Rojas, emphasized that this milestone is the result of years of dedication and consistent support from government entities such as the ICA and the Ministries of Justice and Commerce, which have been instrumental in opening doors to international markets.

Colombia exports cannabis propagation material to several countries within the European Union, Costa Rica, and others. Regarding sexual seeds, destinations include Argentina, Canada, Spain, the United States, England, Lesotho, Peru, Uruguay, Switzerland, and Thailand, among others. This demonstrates the growing global demand for Colombian cannabis, recognized for its quality and compliance with international standards.

This export underscores Colombia’s commitment to developing its cannabis industry, not only as an economic driver but also as an opportunity to position itself as a leader in a competitive global market.
