Colombia strengthens its position as a leader in the export of cannabis, with the recent authorization to send Cannabis sativa plant material to the Republic of North Macedonia, thus adding a new market to the more than 12 countries that already allow the importation of cannabis of Colombian origin.
From the municipality of La Ceja (Antioquia), 180 seedlings of asexual plant material were certified by the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) and sent to North Macedonia, complying with the phytosanitary requirements demanded by the European country.
The ICA granted the Phytosanitary Certificate necessary to authorize the shipment from the José María Córdova International Airport, ensuring that local and international regulations were met.
Colombia has regulations for the export of cannabis propagation plant material to several countries, including those of the European Union and Latin America.
The general manager of the ICA, Juan Fernando Roa Ortiz, highlighted the economic and social impact of this industry, mentioning that “with the ICA closer to the companies that handle this product, we work for the growth of the cannabis sector and its economic impact at a national level.” The collaboration between the ICA, producers and exporters has been crucial to expanding Colombia’s agricultural offer in the global market.
Richmond Seeds S.A.S., the Antioquian company behind this export, has worked for six years on the production of this in-vitro plant, finally achieving international admissibility for both medicinal and scientific purposes.
Felipe Rojas, manager of Richmond Seeds, said that “the support of government agencies, both the ICA and the Ministries of Justice and Commerce, has been fundamental to achieving these exports.”
